The SAT Writing section commences with the essay, which counts for one-third of your 800-point SAT Writing score. This section of the SAT exam also includes multiple-choice writing questions that assess a student’s ability to communicate ideas clearly and effectively, improve a piece of writing through revision and editing as well as recognize and identify sentence-level errors. Students must also show an understanding of grammatical elements and structures as well as how these relate to each other in a sentence.
Students will also recognize correctly-formed grammatical structures, clearly express ideas through sentence combining and improve coherence of ideas within and among paragraphs. Scores for the SAT essay and multiple-choice section are first combined into a single scaled score and then later converted into a final score ranging from 200-800 points. At Visionary Minds Academy, our comprehensive SAT prep course taught by full-time instructors ensures that each student knows exactly what to expect on the SAT exam.
Students are required to write a short, persuasive SAT essay based on an assigned topic. As students will learn in our SAT writing preparation course, the key to succeeding in this section of the Writing test is capitalizing on the term “persuasive.” Even a compelling SAT essay written on a meaningful experience will not score well unless it offers good reason to see things from a particular point of view.
Two readers will grade the essay quickly and holistically – meaning that each student receives a single score from each reader based on overall quality. Each reader will grade the essay on a scale ranging from a high of 6 and a low of 1. These two scores combined produce a total score ranging from a high of 12 to a low of 2. Only an SAT essay that is illegible, off topic or blank will receive a score of 0.
There are 49 questions on the multiple choice portion of the SAT writing section divided into three types: 18 questions on identifying sentence errors, 25 questions on improving sentences and 6 questions on improving paragraphs. Correct answers in this SAT writing section earn students 1 point while incorrect answers cause students to lose ¼ of a point. Students who omit questions neither earn nor lose points.
