The SAT Math section is generally the most feared section of the SAT exam - although just like other sections, the right combination of study skills and test taking techniques can make this section seem a lot less frightening. With the help of our comprehensive SAT prep course, students can approach the math section with reduced test anxiety and increased levels of self-confidence. The first step to conquering the SAT math test is to understand the obstacles you will face on test day.
The SAT math section is different than it was some years ago. There are four major changes that make up the “new” SAT Math test. Fortunately, three of these changes are good news for students. There are fewer math questions on the new SAT exam and the entire math section is five minutes shorter. The new SAT also eliminates those pesky quantitative comparisons. The problem is that the new SAT now covers topics in Algebra II, which makes the math section more difficult than it was before.
Students will encounter two types of questions on the SAT Math section: multiple-choice and student produced responses (or Grid-Ins). Math questions are arranged on the SAT to increase gradually in difficulty and cover topics including Algebra I & II, Geometry, Statistics, Probability, and Data Analysis as well as numbers, operations and functions.
Multiple Choice Questions
This SAT Math section includes 44 Multiple-Choice questions where students are given five answers from which to choose the best one. The Multiple Choice section is straightforward and the same directions apply throughout the entire section.
Grid-In Questions
The Grid-In section includes 10 questions and more closely resembles the types of math tests students take at school. Students will work through each problem and write their answer down in the grid boxes rather than choosing an answer from five choices. Some Grid-In SAT math questions have several correct answers while others have only one. There is no penalty for wrong answers in this section.
