Many students approach us about the experimental section of the SAT, wondering what it is and why it is on the test. At Visionary Minds Academy, our full-time instructors educate students fully on the SAT experimental section including the strategies you should avoid when approaching this commonly misunderstood section of the SAT exam. Once you understand the purpose of the experimental section on the SAT exam and why the College Board uses it, you will quickly discover that it is nothing to fear. Still, we decided to include the SAT experimental section into our comprehensive SAT prep course.
Every student is required to complete ten total sections for the SAT exam. As you already know, there are three main sections of the SAT – critical reading, writing and math. Each of these three sections is then broken down into three sub-sections, accounting for nine total sub-sections that make up the scored portion of the SAT test. The tenth sub-section of the exam, which is known as the experimental section, completes the test.
Every SAT has an experimental section and the College Board uses this section to try out new questions for future tests. The SAT experimental section could be in math, critical reading or writing, but unfortunately, you will not know which one. The good news is that your performance in this section will not factor into your SAT score.
Some students simply count the sections of the SAT to find the experimental section. For example, a student may notice that the SAT exam included 3 sections in critical reading, 3 sections in writing and 4 sections in math. While you can use this strategy to determine that math is in fact the subject of the experimental section, you will be unable to determine the exact section. Before you try to figure out the experimental section, understand that students who attempt this are almost always wrong. You need to treat each section as if it counts because chances are, it does!
