Understanding the Reading Section

Designed to test student skills in vocabulary, reasoning and reading, the SAT Critical Reading section of the exam includes two distinct question types: Sentence Completion and Reading Comprehension. Reading passages are taken from different fields including natural sciences, humanities, social sciences and literary fiction while sentence completion questions measure a student’s knowledge of the meaning of words and understanding of how the different parts of a sentence fit together logically.

Students will be asked to determine the meanings of words from their context in this section of the SAT and show their understanding of information. Students will also synthesize and analyze information, identify cause and effect, make inferences and evaluate author assumptions and techniques. The full-time instructors at our SAT prep course will cover all of these types of critical reading questions to help students achieve higher scores. First, let us take a closer look at the SAT critical reading section.

Critical Reading - Sentence Completion Questions

Most students prefer the Sentence Completion questions of the SAT Critical Reading section as these are the typically the fastest ones to answer. There are no passages to read in this section, which lends the opportunity for students to earn more points in less time. All questions in this section require students to fill in one or two blanks in a sentence. The arrangement of Sentence Completion questions is based on difficulty and questions in this section become increasingly difficult towards the end.

Reading Comprehension Passages and Questions

Reading Comprehension questions appear on the SAT in two forms: short passages and long passages. Short reading comprehension passages (approximately 100-150 words) typically accompany two questions while long reading comprehension passages (approximately 400-850 words) tend to accompany 8 to 13 questions.

All passages and questions for the reading test are predictable and cover topics drawn from the humanities, natural sciences, social sciences and fiction. Success in this part of the SAT Critical Reading section depends on a student’s ability to identify overall tone, details used in the passage as well as the overall meaning of the passage. Students are also required to compare and contrast two passages based on related excerpts.
