Path to Higher Scores on the SAT Test

The first step in conquering the SAT is to understand the individual challenges a student will face on test day. It is always easier to reach a personal goal when the path to get there is clear and free from any unexpected obstacles. At Visionary Minds Academy, we understand that knowledge in this regard is not only power, but also the foundation our students can build upon to achieve extraordinary SAT scores. We strive to make each of the individual challenges presented by the SAT easier for our students to overcome.

The SAT is just one factor in the overall admissions decision. A college or university’s decision to accept or reject a student is generally dependent on not only SAT scores but also high school GPA, academic transcript, interviews, personal essays and letters of recommendation. Still, the weight of the SAT exam alone can mean the difference between acceptance and rejection from the college of your dreams. The weight placed on SAT scores varies from school to school but a high SAT score is one factor that no school will overlook.

About the “New” Sat Test

The SAT test is not the same as it was prior to 2005. Today, the SAT is longer than it once was and covers more material than ever before. For example, the top SAT score through January 2005 was 1600 whereas the new SAT has a top score of 2400. It is the addition of a one-hour writing test that accounts for the 800 “new” points. To start you on your journey to higher SAT scores, let’s start with the basics –what is on the SAT test?

There are three (3) sections of the SAT exam - math, critical reading and writing (the writing section includes an essay). Each section is scored on a 200 to 800-point scale. All students taking the SAT exam are granted 3 hours and 45 minutes to complete it from start to finish.

Math

The math section of the SAT evaluates a student’s abilities in arithmetic, algebra I & II and geometry:

  • 3 Sections

The College Board uses the experimental section of the SAT to evaluate test questions for future SAT exams. Students will not know which section of the SAT is experimental. The experimental section of the SAT is not scored.
